Occasionally, properties will come on the market with historical significance. At Sage & Co Property Agents we have been lucky enough to market a suburb property, which we are proud to announce was sold subject to contract on the first viewing!

Forge Row, Cwmavon was built in 1804 to accommodate the workers at the Varteg Forge. Originally located on the opposite side of the valley, this row of six houses were once twelve tiny cottages, each one the width of just a door and window. They were designed with an alternating left and right pattern, appearing as six cottages with chimneys.

No 1. Forge Row, Cwmavon, Torfaen, Wales

The tiny cottages had four rooms over two floors with front doors opening straight into the kitchen/dining room and very unusually for this time, they each had a back door.

The cottages are an exceptional example of housing built at the time of the of the first large scale Industrial Development of South Wales. It is now one of two surviving examples of housing from the first phase of the Industrial Revolution in Gwent. This importance has been emphasised by the fact that it has now been awarded Grade II listed status on the national list of important historic buildings in 1973.

Varteg Forge closed in 1840 and sadly most of the properties in forge Row became vacant. By the early 1980’s the Row had fallen into disrepair and they were very close to being demolished, however they were rescued and restored by The British Buildings Preservation Trust.

During the renovations many original features were retained including fireplaces and staircases. The original charm was retained yet modern facilities were added. In addition to this, extra staircases and downstairs closets were added, stone walls whitened and doors and windows painted earthy colours.

This little row of iron workers cottages form a very important part of historic buildings conservation in Wales..

Forge Row is a few miles from Brecon Beacons National Park boundary and has good access to The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal and Llandegfedd Resevoir.

The property comprises; Entrance Hall, Lounge, Dining Room, Kitchen & Cloakroom/WC and to the first floor two bedrooms and bathroom with gardens to the front and rear.

The property Sage & Co listed for sale was No.1 Forge Row and the listing described it as a Cottage with the character of a bygone era, restored to contemporary standard. We had great pleasure in offering for sale one of the BEST surviving terraced cottages of Industrial Housing in the South Wales Valleys and possibly the UK.
Forge Row occupies a slightly elevated position from which they enjoy open westerly views over the Valley and hillside beyond. The cottages stand in a picturesque wooded river valley with some outstanding scenery which is a designated conservation area.
